DIY Crochet Dobby and Painted Scabbers the Rat

I hinted in my last post that I had already done some shopping, and I will get to that in a future post, but LOOK WHAT I MADE!  These are just too cool to wait their turn in the spotlight…

It’s Dobby the House Elf and Ron Weasley’s rat Scabbers!

Scabbers was made first, I found black plastic Halloween decor rats at my local Dollar Tree and I figured that if I couldn’t make that work I’d only wasted $1 and some time.  No big deal.  But neither was wasted.

This is what it looked like fresh from Dollar Tree (on the left) and after a paint job (on the right):

Pretty remarkable transformation if you ask me.  Here’s some more photos:

Then I began my house elf:

I started out writing a pattern as I went, but his construction became way too complex for me to make instructions.  So sorry, can’t share a pattern with you all.  But I CAN share some more pictures!

He hasn’t been terribly helpful around the house though – I made the mistake of crocheting him a sock.

The sock even fits his feet!

Hopefully I can convince him to help with the party prep…  This is getting a bit out of hand.  More on that in a future post.  Until then – go make something!  I have to remind myself a lot, and this is good advice for you too, it’s not a waste if you learned something.

Harry Potter Birthday Party Planning

It’s that time of year again… getting ready for back-to-school, for the last trip to the pool, and the multiple last trips to the local ice cream place.  And my son’s birthday is approaching, which means I go into full party-idea-storming-mode.  I thrive on this, kid’s parties use all of my various skills to some degree, but I can get obsessed.  And I definitely am for this one.

Kiddo saw the first two Harry Potter films a couple months ago and he’s HOOKED.  So much so that he saved up gift money and his $2/week allowance to buy the extraordinarily expensive Monster Book of Monsters plush.  He’s never saved money for more than a week and a half, this took him upwards of a month.  Yup, hooked.  So no surprise that he wants a Harry Potter theme this year.  My inner (or outer) geek is squealing with happiness.

My hubby is getting increasingly annoyed with being my only sounding board, and here you all are…  so… these are the ideas I’ve come up with so far:

-Use parchment-y cards to print the invites and seal with wax

-Have a green screen photo booth area and call it Zonkos Joke Shop.  Hubby has all the equipment and some of the knowledge…  Set up a dress up area with clothes and props ready, call it Madam Malkin’s

-Create the great hall using led candles suspended on fishing line, house colors on the tables, house pennants on the wall, candlesticks with led candles, gold and silver accents, table runners (to increase the rich, medieval feeling)

-Make wands with chopsticks, hot glue, beads, paint, whatever, wrap them up and make a little Ollivanders display, with a sign reminding any picky kids that the wand chooses the wizard

-The sweet section of the food table will be Honeydukes, of course, complete with Jelly Belly jelly beans to stand in for Bernie Botts Every Flavor, no gross ones though, and chocolate frogs.

-The drink area can be J. Pippins Potions, with Polyjuice Potion (lime sherbert, Sprite, and green food coloring), and various others with cute name labels on them.

-The cake will instead be cupcakes decorated as dirt with a molded Tootsie Roll Mandrake buried in there.  They’ll have to eat it quickly before they pass out, because I cannot provide ear protection for multiple guests.

-Favors will be collected by the guests in a scavenger hunt manor, call it the Hogwarts Student Supply List.

-Use Lindt white chocolate truffles as Golden Snitches

-Crochet Dobby to display somewhere, find owls, rats, cats, spiders to adorn the room.

I’ve already done some prelim shopping, more on that in the next post.  Til then… craft some sh*t people!

I Finished my Self-Drafted Bag, BUT…

I don’t have a pattern for you.  *Braces herself for the pelting with rotten veggies*  I bit off more than I could chew, and my head just won’t walk me back through it.  In fact, my head wouldn’t even let me touch my keyboard to write about it  It’s now SEVEN months later, I had to ask my incredible hubby, Mr. Justcraftsh*t, for my login info…  But wait!  Before you go gallivanting off to a better blog, I *do* have more goodies in the works.  Better goodies.  I think…  More details in my next post.  Unless my brain explodes, which it has been threatening.  Anywhoo, ’til we meet again… Continue reading

Sneek Peek – One Shoulder Back Pack

So – not-so-recently the Just Craft Sh*t family added a new member, Rosie the dog.  She is charming, adorable, scruffy, smart, and a COMPLETE PSYCHO TERROR.  She fits in well.  🙂

Anyway, this means I am taking impromptu trips to Rosie’s bathroom (aka – walks around our apartment complex).  Not normally a huge problem, slip my phone and keys into a pocket and off we go, but now it is almost summer.  It’s getting warmer, and those summery dresses and skirts don’t tend to have pockets, and I need my hands free to contain the PSYCHO TERROR BEAST.  My purses are all huge (something that happens to all of us once momhood hits), and I don’t want to have to keep adjusting something on my shoulder while keeping everything small that moves safe from her wrath.  And I wanna make something!  Something like… Continue reading

FREE Pattern: Tooth Tooth Fairy Pillow

Aren't I a charming fellow?

I’ve had this idea in my head for a while now, festering and poking me (like the good ones do), that I wanted to make a tooth-shaped tooth fairy pillow for my son, who is rapidly approaching the goofy-missing-tooth-grin phase of childhood.  Searched the ‘net high and low for a cute, free pattern, and found exactly SQUAT.  BUMPKUS.  NADA.  So…  I made my own, and you can too! Reviving a Lost Love

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything.  Too long.  And there is a good reason why.  I don’t believe I’ve mentioned it before, but I suffer from chronic depression and fibromyalgia, two crappy conditions that feed off of each other until I am this tornado of pain and foul moods permanently camped out on the couch with cheese curl crud embedded under my fingernails.  I *do* take medications (yes, that is plural) to fight the depression, but they just haven’t been enough lately, and never really were.  So – enter the backup depression fighters – Mr. JustCraftSh*t and an old, lost love – painting!
